Covers Kubernetes concepts, what is SUSE Rancher Prime, difference between Rancher and Rancher Prime, Rancher Architecture, and more.
SUSE Rancher Prime (Rancher Manager)
SUSE Rancher Prime is an open infrastructure platform for running Kubernetes, containers and virtual machines across cloud, data center and edge. It's built on open source to avoid lock-in and gain sovereignty. You adopt each part of the platform when you need it and manage all of it from one place.
Intelligent platform, managed as one
Rancher Manager is the central control plane of SUSE Rancher Prime. It provisions, governs and audits every cluster, including RKE2, K3s and any CNCF-certified distribution such as EKS, AKS and GKE. This documentation covers Rancher Manager.
Intelligence is built into the control plane. Liz, the SUSE Rancher Prime AI Assistant, sends each question to a crew of specialized agents that manage capabilities like security, observability, platform management, SUSE Linux and SUSE Application Collection; along with the ability to create your own agents. Through MCP, Liz also connects to the tools and data your team already uses, so operators troubleshoot faster and spend less time on repetitive work.
From the same control plane you can add these platform services.
- RKE2 and K3s provide secure Kubernetes for the data center and lightweight Kubernetes for the edge, with up to five years of support.
- SUSE Virtualization runs virtual machines and containers side by side, with GPU support.
- SUSE Storage provides distributed block storage wherever your clusters run.
- SUSE Security delivers zero trust protection from build to runtime.
- SUSE Observability gives you full-stack visibility, built on OpenTelemetry.
- SUSE Application Collection and SUSE Rancher Developer Access give developers signed, hardened images and self-service golden paths.
Specialized vertically integrated platforms dedicated to AI, edge and SAP run on the same foundation.
Built on Rancher Community Edition. Backed by SUSE.
SUSE Rancher Prime shares its open source code with Rancher Community Edition. If you run Rancher Community Edition today, moving to Prime changes how you operate, not what you run. SUSE takes responsibility for 24/7 support backed by SLAs. You get supported release lines with backported fixes, so a security patch does not force a full upgrade. Images are signed, include SBOMs and are served from a trusted registry. Prime also adds capabilities that Rancher Community Edition doesn't include, such as Liz and her AI crew.
