About SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications is an enterprise-grade operating system built to improve, secure and automate SAP environments such as SAP HANA, SAP NetWeaver and SAP S/4HANA. It delivers an optimized platform for SAP workloads, with built-in High Availability, automation, lifecycle management, live patching, SAP landscape monitoring and configuration validation.
1 What is SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications? #
The SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications 16 subscription combines the capabilities of SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and SUSE Linux Enterprise High Availability with SAP-specific automation, monitoring and security components. The result is a platform for SAP applications designed to provide optimized performance, shorten deployment times and reduce planned and unplanned downtime.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for SAP applications 16 includes all the premium capabilities needed to manage your entire SAP infrastructure:
- Automated setup for SAP workloads
SAP software patterns,
saptuneand SAP-specific Ansible roles provide automated deployment and configuration of SAP workloads.- High Availability for SAP
The High Availability features are designed to keep SAP HANA databases, SAP S/4HANA and other SAP applications running during SAP workload, system and environment failures.
- Monitoring and validation with Trento
Trento monitors your system health and validates your setup against SUSE and SAP best practices. The state of your SAP landscape is available through the Trento Web console, Trento API or Trento Model Context Protocol (MCP) server.
- Preconfigured SAP security
SELinux includes SAP-specific policies to help secure the SAP landscape. Pre-built SLES for SAP 16 public cloud images are hardened using security profiles based on CIS benchmarks and DISA STIG.
- Live patching feature
Live patching allows systems to run continuously without planned reboots for up to 12 to 13 months while still receiving critical security and stability patches for the kernel and key libraries.
- Extended lifecycle support
Every minor release is supported for five years, with Long-Term Support (LTS) included in the subscription, making updates more flexible.
2 How are SAP workloads deployed in SLES for SAP 16? #
SLES for SAP provides software patterns that are tailored to specific SAP workloads and
scenarios. These patterns install the required SUSE packages and handle the initial
configuration of your system: basic SAP tuning parameters through saptune and SELinux with
dedicated SAP rules, automatically set to permissive mode. You can select which patterns to
install both during and after the installation of the operating system.
After the base operating system is configured, you can use SUSE-supported Ansible roles to automate the deployment and management of your SAP landscapes.
3 How is High Availability achieved for SAP HANA and SAP applications? #
SUSE High Availability for the SAP HANA database is based on HANA system replication. The High Availability solution
includes resource agents, HA/DR provider hook scripts and tools for specific cluster
administration tasks. The solution can be installed through the
sles_sap_HADB pattern.
SAP HANA High Availability uses the Advanced Next Generation Interface (ANGI) resource agents delivered in the SAPHanaSR-angi package. SAPHanaSR-angi supports various scenarios, including SAP HANA XSA stand-alone. The recommended progressive variant configuration allows SAPHanaSR-angi a faster takeover in certain scenarios and is more resilient against administration mistakes during maintenance. SAPHanaSR-angi can also, in certain cases, react to cluster-external environment problems, such as NFS outages. A list of supported solutions is documented in HA Solutions for SAP HANA using SAPHanaSR-angi.
High Availability for SAP S/4HANA central services is based on the SAP Enqueue Standalone Architecture 2
(ENSA2). The solution integrates the HA cluster with the SAP basic administration framework
through the sap-suse-cluster-connector package. This integration greatly
simplifies cluster administration tasks. The solution can be installed through the
sles_sap_HAAPP pattern. A list of supported solutions is documented in
HA
Solutions for SAP S/4HANA and SAP NetWeaver.
4 How does Trento improve monitoring and validation? #
Trento automatically discovers servers, SAP HANA databases, SAP S/4HANA and SAP NetWeaver applications and clusters. It validates your setup against SUSE and SAP best practices and monitors overall system health. The information can then be accessed through the Trento Web console.
For day-2 operations, Trento provides built-in automation for managing hosts, clusters and SAP systems. These operations are protected by user permissions and include internal guardrails to prevent configuration mistakes.
Additionally, Trento connects to an AI assistant through the Trento MCP server. This integration allows you to generate reports on the monitoring and compliance data collected from your SAP infrastructure, which includes host metrics gathered by SAP host exporters. As a technology preview, the AI assistant can also help identify root causes and troubleshoot system issues.
